In the style of Stephen Hawking

A couple of minutes ago on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4, I heard a reporter refer to the “meteoric rise” of the scientist Stephen Hawking. Our style book says: “As well as being over-used, this is a bit silly when you consider what meteors do, i.e. hurtle towards Earth.”



Ah - but you are just revealing your cultural conditioning which has trapped you into thinking that down is down, when, of course, everything is relative. Down may be down but it can also be up, depending on where you are and how much you have had to drink. However I am willing to be a footsoldier in your battle against the cliche….
