4 x Three Cups of Tea
Many book publishers, in an effort to save the planet (or at least themselves), have taken to sending me, instead of a review copy, an email asking me if I really want a review copy. Until today, that seemed to me evidence of a lack of faith in their authors. Surely if they thought the book was any good, they’d send it immediately… And I don’t need any more emails to answer.
Now I’m having a rethink. This morning I received three packages from Penguin, each containing a copy of the same book: Three Cups of Tea. And I already had a copy. Four times Three Cups of Tea. The handout inside each says Penguin was “Publisher of the Year”. But how much longer can it last?
(The book, incidentally, is the story of how an American mountaineer, Greg Mortenson, survivor of a failed attempt on K2 in 1993, set out to repay the hospitality of Pakistani villagers by building a school. Over the next decade, in the heartland of the Taliban, he built 55.)
