Eavesdropping on the captain
14Feb08
There are passengers who always manage to stretch their legs or get to the loo just before the captain says “We’re in for a spot of turbulence — please fasten your seatbelts.” How do they know it’s coming?
If they’re flying with United Airlines, they’re probably tuning into Channel 9. According to a story in The Wall Street Journal, it allows passengers to eavesdrop on conversations between the captain and air-traffic control. Should more airlines be letting us listen in in this way, on the basis that, the more we know, the more comfortable we’ll feel? Or are you happier, as the Journal puts it, “not seeing how the sausage is made”?
